Chapter 23
Harlow
I wake up to the sun shining through expensive wood blinds. It takes me a few seconds to remember that Iâm not in my shitty apartment anymore. Iâm lying in a way too comfortable bed in Blakeâs guest room, with two boxes of my belongings sitting in the corner, waiting to be put away.
I roll over, prepared to tell Blake good morning, and find that Iâm in bed alone. He had lain down behind me, intent on us falling asleep, but he said we needed another round of âbedtime lovinââ before sleep was allowed. The second time around, he was slow and sweet but still focused on taking care of both of our needs.
When we had lain down, I could see signs of the sun rising, so I knew it was early. I set my alarm an hour and a half ahead with the intention of getting a bit of sleep before taking Alex to school.
Now, I realize that I must not have set it right. Alex should be leaving right now if she has any intention of making it on time, but my alarm hasnât made a peep.
I fling off the covers and open the box with all of my clothes in itâgrabbing an oversized gray t-shirt with a white sugar skull on it and cutoff black sweat pantsâand rush out of my room down to the kitchen.
I stop in the entryway when I find Alexâdressed in a sensible pair of shorts and a blue tank top that covers everythingâsitting at the island and Blake in the kitchen drinking what can only be described, from its color, as a cup full of vomit.
âWhat are you doing up, babe? I turned your alarm off so you could get more sleep.â He gulps the rest of his questionable shake before placing the cup in the sink.
âThe sun coming through the blinds woke me up. Why would you shut my alarm off?â
He gives me a small smile, and the look in his eyes tells me Iâm going to love his next words before he even says them. âYou donât get a lot of sleep, and I thought I would help you out. I got up when I heard Alex moving around and came to make us both breakfast. I was going to run her to school and then come back to wake you up to get ready for work at the diner.â
Yep. Love.
Tears start to well in my eyes. I havenât had help with my overloaded daily schedule in so long that I donât know what to do with this wonderful man offering to help. A pesky tear escapes my eye, and I try to swipe it away before Blake sees it, but Iâm not quick enough.
He rushes around the island toward me, gently wrapping me up in his arms. âBabe, whatâs the matter? Why are you crying?â
I shake my head slowly and grin. âThese are happy tears. I just havenât had help when it comes to all the things I have to do; so itâs overwhelming when you offer to help without me having to ask, thatâs all.
